Euchre is a card game for 4 players. Players sitting across from each other are partners on the same team. The object of Euchre is to be the first team to score 11 points.

At the start of each round, each player is dealt five cards. Another card is turned face up. Each player in turn is given the opportunity either to order up this card to the dealer or to pass. If a player chooses to order it up, the dealer receives it and discards another. This suit becomes trump for this round. The trump suit beats all other suits.

If all four players pass, each in turn has an opportunity to make another suit trump. If all four players pass again, new cards are dealt.

Now the play begins. The player to the left of the dealer plays a card.

Play continues clockwise. When it is your turn, the blue "Play" prompt will appear above your cards. Double-click on a white card to play it. You must play a card of the same suit as the first card if you can.

If you don't have any cards in the suit that was led, you can play any card, including trump.

When each player has played a card, the person who played the highest trump card wins these cards for his or her team. This is called winning a trick. If no trump was played, the person who played the highest card in the suit that was led wins the trick. (The computer keeps track of this automatically.)

The player who won the trick now leads a card. Play continues in this manner until all 4 players have played all of their cards.

Complete Game Guide

If you'd like to learn more about how to play this game, please read the Complete Game Guide.

Here are some tips and tricks to to be the first team to score 11 points!

The highest trump card is the Jack in that suit. The second-highest trump card is the other Jack in the suit of the same color. Thus, if spades is trump, the Jack of Spades is the highest and the Jack of Clubs is the second highest. The remaining cards are ranked Ace through 9.

In Euchre, the ranking of trump cards is different from that in Spades or Bridge. If the trump suit is Hearts, the trump cards are, from highest to lowest: Jack of Hearts (the Right Bower), Jack of Diamonds (the Left Bower), Ace of Hearts, King of Hearts, Queen of Hearts, 10 of Hearts, and 9 of Hearts.

If the Makers both play, scoring is as follows: If they win 3 or 4 tricks, they get 1 point. If they win all 5 tricks, they get 2 points. If they take fewer than 3 tricks, they are euchred and the defenders score 2 points.

If a Trump Maker is going alone and wins all 5 tricks, the team gets 4 points instead of 2. Otherwise, scoring is as above.

Games can be set to a higher or lower point total when initially created through the Options button.

In Euchre, rating points are calculated in the following manner:
- The average rating of the winning team is calculated.
- The average rating of the losing team is calculated.
- The losing team's average is subtracted from that of the winning team.
- Scores are adjusted in accordance with the ratings' chart, as shown below.

Rated games where the difference between opponents ratings is greater than 600 will not affect the players ratings. This is to prevent more experienced player from taking advantage of new players.

When you arrive at an empty table and start a new game, you can set a number of options before launching the game by clicking the Options button just above the game table. Default options - that is, the options that are set automatically unless you specifically change them - are in [brackets].

If you're willing to provide a little information, perhaps someone here in the forums can help you.

What browser are you using? Does the same thing happen if you try a different browser?

What exactly is happening? Do you get an error message or pop-up - if so, exactly what does that message or pop-up say? What anti-virus program are you using?

If you would use the link below and then copy-and-paste the results here, perhaps someone would have some ideas for you to try based on that information. Many players are positive that they have the most current versions, but are surprised to discover that their applications are outdated or not enabled in their browser. This link will show exactly what versions you have:

Did you sign out of Pogo? I sometimes see "currently playing" at the last table I just played. It will change when you pick another room or table.

Euchre • Playing via UK site.....

By PettyThief2 » May 5th, 2013, 3:31 am

I have been playing Pogo free games from when it was Excite games. Quite a while. In the last 2/3 months I couldn't play - and neither could others either - all were having the problems of freezing up, or just not being able to load table via the US/Canada button. Someone in a lobby said the only way they could now play was via the UK site. Lo, and behold, I started this name via that entrance and outside of the freeze ups I was able to play again. Now I see that the UK site is being closed down along with the free site. The Pogo site has always been a free site for all the games here, and usually things like the freeze ups etc are fixed by pogo when enough people made them aware.

I can't see paying a membership to play at a supposed free site, or any point in paying when I can't enter by the only means being left open. I know i'm not the only one who is beyond infuriated by all of this either.

Just the fact that a certain browser works is a clear sign that the issue isn't with Pogo - if it were, that browser wouldn't work either. When one browser works and another doesn't, it's usually a sign that one browser has certain settings (either in the tabbed internet options themselves or as an add-on, plug-in or extension) that interferes with a certain facet of game loading and the other does not. When no browser will work, it's often a sign that a user's anti-virus or firewall program/s are causing the interference, usually through the same sorts of settings.

These settings and permissions are often ones that advocate internet privacy - they block cookies, they block tracking, they block ads, etc. And that's all swell, but they will interfere with the mechanics of loading a browser-based game. Browser-based games store game data primarily on their own host's servers and because of that, need to be able to relay information back and forth. Those using privacy permissions should at very least disable them for their Pogo playing or set up a browser specifically for game playing that has no browser-based blocks.

Excellent suggestion Mod_Skratty! This is a great alternative for players experiencing issues with their games. THANK YOU!

Pogo is working with Oracle (Java) towards resolutions. I'm glad you found the answer for your problem.
Many times the members here will suggest trying a different browser as the 1st step of a solution.
It's a good idea to have a backup browser to use. :ugeek:

It seems obvious that the POGO gods are not fixing the JAVA issue(s) that A LOT of THEIR customers are having. Just for POGO; I downloaded Firefox Browser and what to my amazement? I am able to play euchre once more or until JAVA issues arise with Firefox. If that happens it's bye-bye POGO at that point.
I will NOT pay to play FREE games either

Mac OS X 10.7.3 version and above (Mountain Lion & Lion)

This tip has resolved the Java 7 / Safari issue for other Mac users maybe it will help you too.

1. Go to http://www.java.com/en/download/testjava.jsp

2. This takes you to to a blank box with the words "inactive plug-in" in the middle, click on the words "inactive plug-in"

3. You will get a pop-up box that says "Do You Want To Run This Application". Click run.

4. Go to Pogo and try playing.

If the above tip doesn't resolve the problem, check out the information Pogo tboo posted in this thread:

Enable Java for Lion (OS X10.7) and Mountain Lion (OS X10.8)

And if that doesn't help, this information that was posted on MacRumors on 4/16/2013 might be helpful:

Apple releases Safari and java updates with plug-in and security-improvements
